When studying John 4:3-29, the woman at the well, we discover a few truths.
John 4:24-26 “God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. 25. The woman saith unto Him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when He is come, He will tell us all things. 26. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am He.”
The backdrop at that time was that Jews rather travelled detours in an endeavour to wilfully not have to travel through Samaria, given mostly they travelled on foot. Jesus decided to travel the shortest route – through Samaria.
Strange enough the woman was at the well around noon, this is odd, as it is the hottest part of the day, and custom was for women to fetch water early mornings or late afternoon, this custom became a social gathering for the women. This woman went alone – for her own reasons. Custom was also for Jews not to mingle with Samaritans, neither for males and females unknown to each other. For a Jewish Rabbi to start a conversation with this woman was totally unthinkable. Give a though also to the fact that 12 disciples went to buy food.
Is it possible that Jesus had a divine appointment with this woman, and that He wants to tell us His heart for us is also desperately seeking a divine appointment with each of us? He want to spend time alone with us, in order for us to open our hearts to Him and give Him all our burdens. In return He wants to brake the yoke that is on us and lift us up according to His word.
Matthew 11:28-30 “28. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Jesus not only wants to lift our burdens, He want to save us from our sinful lives and give us eternal life. We need to be willing to acknowledge that we are sinners and that we need a Saviour.
John 12: 47 “And if any man hear My words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.”
Jesus is waiting for us to come to Him and seek Him for who He is. The Saviour of the world.
Isaiah 12:3 “Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.”
Jesus wants us to come and sit at His feet not only for us to tell Him everything that is worrying, but also for us to be quite and listen to what He has to say. To learn from Him and live life the way He is teaching us. Because then we will be save and will be able to live a peaceful life. Not the peace the world is giving, but His peace that passes all understanding. Let us come and sit at the well and open our hearts for His soft and powerful voice, hear Him when He calls and allow Him to fill that empty space in our lives, we can’t even define. Allow Him to lead the way and we, obediently following Him every step of the way.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, great is your mercy unto us. We glorify Your holy Name. Through Your Spirit, please help us to hear the voice calling us to You. Help us to be still and listen for what You have to say and teach us. May we always have a teachable spirit that honours You and be doers of Your word and not only listeners. In Jesus Name Amen
